"The principles of the Raymond Waites Design Competition are to foster creative spirit, visual inspiration and rooms that have an emotional warmth, rooms that are comfortable, friendly…and display an ageless mix of design influences reflecting various cultures."

-Raymond Waites, noted designer and arbiter of interior fashion/style trends
All full time undergraduate interior design students enrolled at an accredited college, university or art school who have completed at least one semester of interior design course work, are eligible to enter this exciting national competition sponsored by the IFDA Educational Foundation.

Your entry might be done as a classroom or extra credit project…or on your own, perhaps during the holiday break. Your challenge is to create an interior with a "traditional mix" of furnishings and decoration, typical of residential design projects you may encounter in your future career.

Expand your design horizons with your vision of a beautiful space for living and dining that reflects an intermingling of classic traditional themes with today’s multi-cultural influences…and which suits the needs/desires of a "fantasy client" you will profile. Your entry may include hand drawn as well as CAD generated elements.

Create the "dream living space" you have imagined…and you could win $5000 for educational expenses, PLUS a trip to North Carolina and the huge High Point International Home Furnishings Market in April, 2010.

As the competition winner, you will be the guest of honor and your winning entry on display at a special event hosted by Mr. Waites. You will also visit company showrooms featuring the newest decorating trends, see an array of furniture and accessory introductions, attend designer seminars and other exciting market events.

Mail so your entry is postmarked no later than the deadline--
February 1, 2010. Incomplete or late entries cannot be considered.

Prepare three (3) separate 11x14 in. spiral or ring binder "Presentation Portfolios " which will be reviewed by the three competition judges. Your design boards are to be color copied or digitally photographed and arranged with the other required entry elements in the following order in each of the three Portfolios.

1. APPLICATION
Fill out the application completely and sign it.

2. TRANSCRIPT*
Obtain the latest copy of your school transcript to verify current enrollment, and that you have completed at least one semester of interior design course work.

3. ESSAY
Write a 200-500 word essay, discussing the inspiration/vision/spirit/emotion of your traditional/eclectic design concept and describe a profile of the "fantasy client" who would live in the space. Also briefly outline your career goals.

4. INSPIRATION
Include an "inspiration page" showing the elements that inspired you--it could be items from nature, photos, art, colors, a quote…whatever helped you focus as you created your design.

5. CHALLENGE
Create a Living Room with Dining, up to 1200 square feet, including architectural elements such as fireplace, bay window, columns, beams, etc.

6. FLOOR PLAN
Develop a Floor Plan in ¼ inch scale, show architectural details, furniture placement, and lighting/outlets.

7. ELEVATIONS/PERSPECTIVES/COLOR RENDERINGS
Create elevations in ½ inch scale, perspective views, color renderings that illustrate your vision of the space, a total of 3-6. Can be drawn or CAD generated.

8. SPECIFICATIONS
Show the selection of fabrics, furniture, finishes, materials, and colors in your design.

9. ONE ORIGINAL DESIGN
One product in your living/dining concept must be an original design you create, drawn separately in detail--suitable for current manufacturing and marketing practices.

*Note: Your transcript should be included if at all possible. If necessary, it may be sent separately as long as it is received no later than February 6, 2010.

Send a package containing all three portfolios to:

Merry Mabbett Dean, FIFDA
10765 SW Canterbury Lane, #101

Mark "Competition Entry" on the outside of the envelope. Be sure it is postmarked by February 1, 2010 in order to be reviewed by competition judges. Late entries will not be considered. The winner will be notified in early March.
